The signs to look and listen for
One sign on its own can have a simple cause. Several signs appearing together are more likely to point to a restriction in the shared drain run.
- Water draining more slowly than normal
- Gurgling from toilets, sinks or showers
- Unpleasant drain smells
- Several fittings slowing down at the same time
- Water rising in an outside gully or manhole
One fitting or several?
A single slow sink may have a blockage close to the trap or waste pipe. If a toilet, shower and outside drain are all affected, the restriction may be farther along the underground run.
What to do when water is backing up
Stop adding water where possible and keep people and pets away from any wastewater. Avoid repeatedly flushing a toilet or running taps into a system that is already full, then arrange an assessment of the affected drain.
Do not ignore a pattern
If the same symptoms keep returning, note which fittings are affected and how soon the problem comes back. That information can help decide whether clearance alone is enough or whether inspection is worthwhile.
