See what is underground

A practical guide to CCTV drain surveys

A CCTV drain survey gives a view inside underground pipework. It is most useful when there is a clear question to answer, such as why a blockage keeps returning or where a suspected defect is located.

01

What the camera can find

The survey records the visible condition of the pipe and helps locate a fault along the run.

  • Cracks, holes and damaged pipe sections
  • Displaced or open joints
  • Root entry
  • Debris, scale or other deposits
  • Sections that appear to hold waste or water
02

Why the drain may need clearing first

A camera cannot give a useful view through standing wastewater or a solid blockage. Clearance may be needed first so the camera can travel along the pipe and the wall of the drain can be seen.

03

When a survey adds useful evidence

CCTV is particularly helpful for recurring blockages, suspected damage and locating a repair. It can also show that a drain is clear and appears sound after an obstruction has been removed.

04

What happens after the survey

The findings should guide the next step. That may be no further work, more cleaning to remove deposits or a targeted repair where a defect is affecting the drain.

Common questions

See what is underground

Can a CCTV survey see through a blockage?+

Usually not. The drain often needs clearing first so the camera can pass through and show the condition of the pipe.

When should I consider a drain camera survey?+

It is useful when a blockage keeps returning, damage is suspected or the location of a possible repair needs identifying accurately.

Does a survey always mean the drain needs repairing?+

No. A survey may show that the pipe is sound after clearance. Any repair should be based on the condition and significance of what is found.
